Focus 2010 The Atlantic City Garden Pier Project
The first Garden Pier was erected in 1913 at a cost of more than $1,000,000.00. It had walls of Terra Cotta tile built around structural steel frames with Spanish title rooms and copper cornices. Flower beds occupied the center of the structure. A theater was built on the ocean end of the pier, an Easter concert by great Irish tenor John McCormick was a tradition for many years along with the John Phillip Sousa band. Garden Pier derived its name from the beautifully arranged flower gardens on its deck. Its previous career was a glamorous, having featured international headlines while serving as a summer setting for musicals, concerts and plays. History of Atlantic City
The "Garden Pier Project" a look at the past.
Atlantic City is at a crossroads. The City and the Casinos are sitting down together to help come up with a plan that addresses public safety, cleaning up the streetscape, city and state cooperation along with advertising and special events. This is a smart team of people and I look forward to their collective results. With experience managing casino interior and exterior landscape projects in Atlantic City I understand the many challenges faced in this seashore environment but also see the possibilities. Thanks Russell Young
| The garden pier is a great place to create a formal landscaped flower garden modeled on the original design. In the 1920's Atlantic City looked like a worlds fair exhibit. Extravagant gardens, fountains, arts and entertainment something for everyone. Recreating these seashore gardens will give the city its edge on neighboring competition. The ACSID landscapes, infrastructure improvements, the casino hotel properties along with the walk convention center and train station must be commended. But it is the beauty of the landscape the green connection between the city and the casinos. Our goal is to be apart of the “green bridge” and help Atlantic City emerge as a first class garden resort destination. More street trees, parks and community gardens will encourage more visitors and year round residents. Many urban areas have revitalize empty city blocks with veggie and flower gardens.
